Comparing Jesus & Muhammad -(peace be upon them)

-Sheik Yusuf Estes

“are you that prophet” [bible, john 1:20]

that prophet?

who was he?

comparing jesus & muhammad
“the comforter, the spirit of truth, whom the father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that i said unto you.”
[bible – john 14:26]

jesus, the son of mary, said, “a messenger will come after me, named ahmad.”
[noble quran 61:6]

the chief priests and levites asked john the baptist, “if you are not the christ (messiah), and not elijah – are you that prophet?”
[bible – john 1:20]

when the chief priests and levites asked john the baptist who he was, they asked him in a very strange way. first they questioned him as to whether or not he was the anticipated “messiah” [christ in koine greek]. he was not the “messiah” that had hoped for. next they asked if he was the prophet elijah and again he tells them, “no.” now comes the really strange part. finally, they asked him if he is “that prophet?”

are you christ? – [no]
are you elijah? – [no]
are you that prophet? – [no]

what did they mean by “that prophet?” we of course, know who the “christ” is. after all, christians should know that “christ” is merely a shortened form of the koine greek word “christos,” intended to mean the hebrew word “messiah.”

the jews of two thousand years ago were definitely looking for the messiah, who it was foretold in their books, would come and lead them to victory over their oppressors and thus gain for them mastery over this world. they were much oppressed under roman domination and even their own jewish kings were seen as nothing more than puppets or agents for the disbelievers. certainly, they would have been most happy to see someone come on the scene who would defeat their roman masters and slave drivers.

then the priests and levites asked john the baptist if he might be the prophet elijah, returning back after hundreds of years being away. there was the notion amongst them that elijah would come back. but again, john the baptist is denying he is elijah.

then, who is he? they wonder at this man living out in the desert and forsaking wealth and luxury and fasting, avoiding the material attractions of life.

again, they ask john the baptist who he is. “are you that prophet?” and one more time he denies being “that prophet,” but then he does tell them about someone who will come after him soon, whom he claims he is not worthy to even unlace his shoes.

however, this does not answer the question, “who were they expecting besides the messiah?” could it be they were looking for someone like muhammad? (could be)

who is that prophet? –

keep reading and learn who “that prophet” is and what other proofs can be discovered within the holy texts to support this idea.

for centuries muslims have believed jesus (peace be upon him) was “that prophet” mentioned in these words of the gospel of john. the quran states one of the important features of jesus’ mission was to give the “bashir” or ‘glad tidings’ of the coming of the prophet muhammad, peace be upon him. during his short missionary career that lasted not more than three years, and which was overshadowed by the hostile attitude of his own people, jesus gave them the good news of ahmad, (one of the forms of “muhammad”) the last messenger of god, who would perfect the divine teaching both in theory and in practice. the quran mentions that, jesus says:
“o children of israel! i am the messenger of allah {almighty god} (sent) to you, confirming the law (torah or old testament) before me, and giving glad tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name shall be ahmad.”

[noble quran 61:6]
the quran gives the name as ahmad, one of several ways to say muhammad’s name. just as we have in english the name joseph, and often use a shorter form such as “joe” or the familiar form, “joey,” and other names like “jonathan” which becomes “john”; “jack” or “johnny”, so in the same way we find arabic has similar forms for a name. muhammad, ahmad and hamad are a few of the names originating from the root word, “hamd” (meaning ‘praise) in arabic, and can be understood as “the one who praises (god)”; “the praised one”; “praising”; etc.

abdullah yusuf ali in his translation of the meanings of the quran to english, he states, “ahmad or muhammad, the praised one is a translation of the koine greek word periclytos. in the present gospel of john 14:16, 15:26 and 16:7, the greek word paracletos is translated in the niv as comforter. paracletos can mean an advocate, or “one called to the help of another”, “a kind friend.” muhammad (peace be upon him) was known from birth as one who brought comfort and reconciliation to family, friends and strangers alike, especially in bringing together the ties of kinship and brotherly love.

another nick name of the prophet muhammad (peace be upon him) mentioned in the bible (or at least what is left of it in the english language) is “the spirit of truth.” as-saddiq means exactly that and it is was another name given to muhammad (peace be upon him) by those who knew his proclivity for honesty and integrity.

the new testament gospel according to john, jesus (peace be upon him) promises them the paracletos will come four times (john 14:16; 14:26; 15:26; 16:7). naturally, jesus (peace be upon him) did not return in their lifetime nor did any other prophet for that matter, so later thinkers came up with the notion that it was not jesus “in person” but rather, jesus coming back in “spirit form.” this led some christians to assert, this was to be the holy spirit, who would descend upon the disciples on the day of the pentecost (acts 2), to witness christ and lead them into the whole truth and to be with the believers forever, and they would not die (john 3:16), but have everlasting life. also, some added verses later (see footnotes to revised standard version of the bible) to the very last chapter of mark (16), wherein, they have the spirit coming upon them in such a way they imagined themselves going to be able to speak with new languages; pick up snakes, lay hands on the sick to cure them and even drink poison and nothing would hurt them. [luke 23:17-18]

another point is, the paracletos, comforter or the spirit of truth, was going to dwell with us from now on. certainly anyone could see muhammad’s influence and his message of worshipping only one god without any partners has prevailed long after his earthly life.

PATENT OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PBUH)

PATENT OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PBUH)

(John Davenport. An apology for Mohammed and the Koran. 1869. Pages 147-151. The book is available on Archive.org)

Intro: Richard Pococke (19 November 1704 – 25 September 1765)[1] was an English prelate and anthropologist. He was Protestant Bishop of Ossory (1756–65) and Meath (1765), both dioceses of the Church of Ireland. However, he is best known for his travel writings and diaries.

He was also distantly related to Edward Pococke, the English Orientalist and biblical scholar.

By the grace of Allah I have found the complete record of the Covenant in Christian sources, in the above mentioned book of a noble writer, John Davenport:

“In proof of the correctness of the view thus taken by the historian of the tolerant character of Mohammed, the following public document is here inserted, being extracted from a work entitled ‘A Description of the East and other Countries,’ by Richard Pococke, Bishop of Meath, and published in 1743, vol. i. p. 268. The high character of its author for piety, integrity and learning is a sufficient voucher for the authenticity of the document which is as follows :—

The Patent of Muhammed(pbuh), which he granted to the Monks of Mount Sinai, and to Christians in general.

“As God is great and governeth, from whom all the prophets are come, for there remaineth no record of injustice against God; through the gifts that are given unto men, Mohammed, the son of Abdallah, the Apostle of God, and careful guardian of the whole world, has written the present instrument, to all those that are his national people, and of his religion, as a secure and positive promise to be accomplished to the Christian nation and relations of the Nazareen, whosoever they may be, whether they be the noble or the vulgar, the honourable or otherwise, saying thus:

I. Whosoever of my nation shall presume to break my promise and oath which is contained in this present agreement, destroys the promise of God, acts contrary to the oath and will be a resister of the faith (which God forbid!) for he becometh worthy of the curse, whether he be the king himself or a poor man, or what person soever he may be.

II. That whenever any of the monks in his travels shall happen to settle on any mountain, hill, village, or in any other habitable place, on the sea or in deserts, or in any convent, church, or house of prayer, I shall be in the midst of them, as the preserver and protector of them, their goods and effects, with my soul, aid and protection, jointly with all my national people, because they are a part of my own people, and an honour to me.

III. Moreover, I command all officers not to require any poll tax of them or any other tribute, because they shall not be forced or compelled to anything of this kind.

IV. None shall presume to change their judges or governors, but they shall remain in their office without being deposed.

V. No one shall molest them when they are travelling on the road.

VI. Whatever churches they are possessed of, no one is to deprive them of them.

VII. Whosoever shall annul any of these my decrees, let him know positively that he annuls the ordinance of God.

VIII. Moreover, neither their judges, governors, monks, servants, disciples, or any others depending on them, shall pay any poll tax or be molested on that account, because I am their protector, wheresoever they shall be, either by land or sea, east or west, north or south; because both they and all that belong to them are included in this my promissory oath and patent.

IX. And of those that live quietly and solitary upon the mountains, they shall exact neither poll tax nor tithes from their incomes, neither shall any Mussulman partake of what they have, for they labour only to maintain themselves.

X. Whenever the crop of the earth shall be plentiful in its due time, the inhabitants shall be obliged, out of every bushel, to give them a certain measure.

XI. Neither in time of war shall they take them out of their habitation, nor compel them to go to the wars, nor even then shall they require of them any poll-tax.

In these eleven chapters is to be found whatever relates to the monks; as to the remaining seven chapters they direct what relates to every Christian.

XII. Those Christians who are inhabitants, and with their riches and traffic are able to pay the poll-tax, shall pay no more than 12 drachmas.

XIII. Excepting this, nothing more shall be required of them, according to the express word of God, that says: ‘Do not molest those that have a veneration for the Books that are sent from God, but rather, in a kind manner, give of your good things to them, and converse with them, and hinder every one from molesting them.’

XIV. If a Christian woman shall happen to marry a Mussulman, the Mussulman shall not cross the inclination of his wife to keep her from her chapel and prayers and the practice of her religion.*

XV. That no person hinder them from repairing their churches.

XVI. Whosoever acts contrary to this my grant, or gives credit to anything contrary to it, becomes truly an apostate from God and his divine Apostle, because this protection I have granted to them according to this promise.

XVII. No one shall bear arms against them, but, on the contrary, the Mussulmans shall wage war for them.

XVIII. And by this I ordain that none of my nation shall presume to do or act contrary to this promise until the end of the world.

* Turkish lawyers give as an example of this point, that the Mussulman son of a Christian mother is bound to convey her, when old or infirm, to the church door, upon a beast (horse or a mule etc.); and should he be poor and possess no beast, he is bound to carry her on his shoulders.”[1]

Tasks not beyond their capabilities

According to Aisha(may Allah be pleased with her), the Prophet(pbuh) never gave others tasks which were beyond their capabilities.

The Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) Sincerity

One common argument against the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is that he created or invented Islam in order to get power and money!

Well this argument is very easy to debunk, all we have to do is quote an authentic hadith which reports a very interesting incident that occurred between the pagans the prophet Muhammad himself, the report is as follows:

Yazid b. Ziyad from Muhammad b. Ka’b al-Qurazi told me that he was told that Utba b. Rabi’a, who was the chief, said one day while he was sitting in the Quraysh assembly and the apostle was sitting in the mosque by himself, Why should I not go to Muhammad and make some proposals to him which if he accepts in part, we will give him whatever he wants, and he will leave us in peace?’ This happened when Hamza had accepted Islam and they saw that the prophet’s followers were increasing and multiplying. They thought it was a good idea, and Utba went and sat by the prophet and said, O my nephew, you are one of us as you know, of the noblest of the tribe and hold a worthy position in ancestry. You have come to your people with an important matter, dividing the community thereby and ridiculing their customs, and you have insulted their gods and their religion, and declared that their forefathers were unbelievers, so listen to me and I will make some suggestions, and perhaps you will be able to accept one of them.’ The apostle agreed, and he went on, If what you want is money, we will gather for you out of our property so that you may be the richest of us; if you want honour, we will make you our chief so that no one can decide anything apart from you; if you want sovereignty, we will make you king, and if this ghost which comes to you, which you see, is such that you cannot get rid of him, we will find a physician for you, and exhaust our means in getting you cured of it’, or words to that effect. The apostle listened patiently, and then said: Now listen to me, In the Name of God, the compassionate and merciful, H.M., a revelation from the compassionate, the merciful, a book whose verses are expounded as an Arabic Quran for a people who understand, as an announcement and warning, though most of them turn aside not listening and say, Our hearts are veiled from that to which you invite us.”” Then the apostle continued to recite it to him. When Utba heard it from him, he listened attentively, putting his hands behind his back and leaning on them as he listened. Then the prophet ended at the prostration and prostrated himself, and said, You have heard what you have heard, Abu Al Walid; the rest remains with you.’ When Utba returned to his companions they noticed that his expression had completely altered, and they asked him what happened. He said that he had heard words such as he had never heard before, which were neither poetry, spells, nor witchcraft. Take my advice and do as I do, leave this man entirely alone for, by God, the words which I have heard will be blazed abroad. If (other) Arabs kill him, others will have rid you of him; if he gets the better of the Arabs, his sovereignty will be your sovereignty, his power your power, and you will be prosperous through him.’ They said, He has bewitched you with his tongue.’ To which he answered, You have my opinion, you must do what you think fit.’ (Alfred, Guillaume. The Life of Muhammad, A Translation of Ibn Ishaq’s Sirat Rasu AllahOxford University press, 2002. PP. 131-132)

So notice what the pagans did, they sent a representative to try and negotiate with the prophet Muhammad, they offered him power, money, and anything he wanted! If the Prophet Muhammad’s goal was for all of these things then why didn’t he accept it, it was mission accomplished if we are to believe the critics argument.

The prophet Muhammad completely rejected the offer, and he rejected it in the most beautiful manner, by reciting the Quran, to show them that this is the truth, and the truth cannot be compromised for anything, and that it isn’t about money or power, it’s about salvation and bringing people back to the straight path of God.

So no, the prophet Muhammad was not out for money, power, or to become a king, if he was, then he would have accepted this offer, rather he rejected it and went through so much trouble, hardship, pain, and all for the truth of Islam.

And Allah Knows Best!

The Generosity of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

The critics of the blessed prophet Muhammad claim that he was a man who was after the riches, after the money, and that this was one of his main concerns. So let us quote an authentic hadith about the prophet Muhammad, read it with an open mind as well as with honesty, and after you have read it ask yourself the question, is this man really after money? Is this man really a greedy person after his own glory and riches? The authentic hadith is as follows:

Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number 434:

Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah:

I went to the Prophet in the mosque, and he ordered me to pray two Rakat. He owed me some money and he repaid it to me and gave more than what was due to me.

So tell me, does this sound like a greedy man after glory and riches? According to this incident, the prophet Muhammad owed someone some money, the prophet paid the debt back, and not only did he pay the debt back, he gave more money than was due! For instance say you owe someone 20 dollars, and you pay the 20 dollars back, as well as giving an extra 20 dollars which you didn’t even have to!

This my friends is a characteristic of excellent generosity, this is not the characteristic of someone who is out for himself only, looking to make himself rich, rather this is somebody giving more than he has to simply because of his good generous character.

In fact in this same hadith collection we also find another interesting incident:

Volume 1, Book 8, Number 413:

Narrated Anas:

Some goods came to Allah’s Apostle from Bahrain. The Prophet ordered the people to spread them in the mosque –it was the biggest amount of goods Allah’s Apostle had ever received. He left for prayer and did not even look at it. After finishing the prayer, he sat by those goods and gave from those to everybody he saw. Al-’Abbas came to him and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! give me (something) too, because I gave ransom for myself and ‘Aqil” Allah’s Apostle told him to take. So he stuffed his garment with it and tried to carry it away but he failed to do so. He said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Order someone to help me in lifting it.” The Prophet refused. He then said to the Prophet: Will you please help me to lift it?” Allah’s Apostle refused. Then Al-’Abbas threw some of it and tried to lift it (but failed). He again said, “O Allah’s Apostle Order someone to help me to lift it.” He refused. Al-’Abbas then said to the Prophet: “Will you please help me to lift it?” He again refused. Then Al-’Abbas threw some of it, and lifted it on his shoulders and went away. Allah’s Apostle kept on watching him till he disappeared from his sight and was astonished at his greediness. Allah’s Apostle did not get up till the last coin was distributed.

So we see several things from this hadith, several important characteristics of the prophet Muhammad that allow us to know how he was, and what wonderful characteristics indeed!

According to the hadith the prophet Muhammad had received several goods from Bahrain, after receiving all the goods he ordered some of his companions to take the goods and start spreading them around the mosque for the distribution amongst the people, we find that the prophet did not leave till even one coin was not distributed for the people! On top of that the hadith does not state anything about the prophet taking any of these goods for himself, rather he was giving it all to the people! So this again indicates a man with an excellent attribute of generosity for his people, and a man who is not out for his own fortune and glory, had the prophet been a man who was simply looking for glory and riches, he would have simply taken all the goods for himself, or even better, he could have sold it all for more money! Yet he does no such thing, rather he freely distributes everything to the people at no cost!

Another interesting aspect to this hadith is the greedy man Al-Abbas, this man came and started taking so much goods that it became too heavy and too much for him to carry alone, so he started asking for help, but the prophet refused. However even with that, the man still did not stop, he continued to take and take, and the prophet simply watched in amazement and astonishment at the level of greediness in this man! So what does this tell us about the prophet? It tells us that he was a man who disliked greediness, put this on top of the fact that the prophet took none of these goods for himself, but distributed it for the people, and then you see the bigger picture and a very good portrait of the prophet’s characteristic.

What makes this even more interesting is that the prophet did not even stop the greedy man! The prophet Muhammad is so kind, gentle, and merciful that he even allowed this greedy man to indulge himself with his greed and take as much as he wanted to.

So in conclusion from these two hadiths alone we see how generous the prophet Muhammad was, and we also see from these two hadiths that it is simply nonsense to claim that this man who acted in such a way was after glory and fortune! My friends, these are TWO HADITHS only! There are literally hundreds of more hadiths that show the prophet’s generosity and charitable behavior, it would take a book to document it all.

And Allah Knows Best!

The Divine Revelation

The Divine Revelation

Narrated ‘Aisha:

(the mother of the faithful believers) The commencement of the Divine Inspiration to Allah’s Apostle was in the form of good dreams which came true like bright day light, and then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon him. He used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hira where he used to worship (Allah alone) continuously for many days before his desire to see his family. He used to take with him the journey food for the stay and then come back to (his wife) Khadija to take his food like-wise again till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira. The angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet replied, “I do not know how to read.

The Prophet added, “The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, ‘I do not know how to read.’ Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read but again I replied, ‘I do not know how to read (or what shall I read)?’ Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, ‘Read in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists) has created man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous.” (96.1, 96.2, 96.3) Then Allah’s Apostle returned with the Inspiration and with his heart beating severely. Then he went to Khadija bint Khuwailid and said, “Cover me! Cover me!” They covered him till his fear was over and after that he told her everything that had happened and said, “I fear that something may happen to me.” Khadija replied, “Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your Kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones.”

Khadija then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin ‘Abdul ‘Uzza, who, during the PreIslamic Period became a Christian and used to write the writing with Hebrew letters. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Khadija said to Waraqa, “Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!” Waraqa asked, “O my nephew! What have you seen?” Allah’s Apostle described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, “This is the same one who keeps the secrets (angel Gabriel) whom Allah had sent to Moses. I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out.” Allah’s Apostle asked, “Will they drive me out?” Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, “Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly.” But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while.

Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah Al-Ansari while talking about the period of pause in revelation reporting the speech of the Prophet “While I was walking, all of a sudden I heard a voice from the sky. I looked up and saw the same angel who had visited me at the cave of Hira’ sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I got afraid of him and came back home and said, ‘Wrap me (in blankets).’ And then Allah revealed the following Holy Verses (of Quran):

‘O you (i.e. Muhammad)! wrapped up in garments!’ Arise and warn (the people against Allah’s Punishment),… up to ‘and desert the idols.’ (74.1-5) After this the revelation started coming strongly, frequently and regularly.”

A Brief introduction to Prophet of God-3

The Gist of Prophet’s teachings

-Sheik Yusuf Estes

There is a large collection of the Prophet’s teachings, beliefs, morals, manners and principles. The greatness and glory of Islam rests upon these ideals. Only a portion of them are listed here.

Purity of Self

1. Wise is he who regards himself small, and performs deeds that are useful after death; foolish is he who is controlled by his desires and expectant of Allah’s grace and mercy.
2. The strong man is he who controls himself, not the one who throws down his adversary.
3. Contentment is treasure that is never empty.
4. To give up the unimportant is highly religious.
5. Advice is a trust and wrong instruction is a breach of trust.
6. To give up evil or wickedness is also a charity.
